The New Standard for Music Marketing

Is Facebook Placing Music and Band Ads Correctly?

Actually I think they are. Today I was checking one of my events on Facebook to see the response, when I ran across the pictured ad:

Whole Wheat Bread is advertising on Facebook.

The ironic part, it directs the person clicking to their Myspace Page.

What does this ad tell us? 3 key points:

  1. Bands are starting to market themselves on Facebook with Pay-Per-Click ads. Even if their click thrus are low, they are still getting serious exposure to everyone looking on Facebook.
  2. Without knowing the particulars of the ad placement and campaign, I can say that the ad was relevant to me and to my event. The event was an Orlando pre-party for Florida Music Festival that one of my companies was sponsoring. It is music themed and was sent out to people all across the state. Why is the state relevant, Whole Wheat Bread is from Jacksonville, FL, so there is a geotargeting effect going on here.
  3. Lastly, music marketers still have no idea how to use a successful landing page, or drive revenue from their paid ad. Not only did they pay for my click, they also sent me to a competitor. The issue with this is that most people on Facebook migrated there because they think Myspace sucks or is irrelevant to them.

I applaud Fighting Records and Whole Wheat Bread for the effort to spread their marketing efforts onto the Social Networks and also to begin using Facebook as a medium for music. I also applaud Facebook for serving the ad up in a relevant location.

Maybe bands will learn about landing pages one day. Maybe I’ll have to go over that as well.

Off to a great weekend at FMF. If you are in or around Orlando tonight, come check out the jamblr and Rock For Hunger pre-party at Central Station’s Rock Bar!
